Lamar Upshaw March 26, 1942 - Oct. 18, 2012

SOUTH BEND - Lamar Upshaw, 70, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 11:05 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Michiana Health & Rehabilitation Center in Mishawaka, IN, following an illness. He was born on March 26, 1942, to the late Obie and Frances (Washington) Upshaw in Phenix City, Alabama. Lamar was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he graduated from Taft High School and then attended Indiana University. Lamar then moved to Massachusetts, where he married Ann M. Szymkowiak on June 27, 1971, in Foxboro, Massachusetts. He resided in Massachusetts from 1971 until his retirement from I.B.M. in 2006 after 30 years of employment. Following retirement he moved to South Bend, Indiana. He is survived by his wife, Ann M. Upshaw of South Bend, Indiana; three sisters, Janice Anderson of Las Vegas, Nevada, Janice Dorsey of Saginaw, Michigan, Debbie Upshaw of Atlanta, Georgia; two brothers, Dennis Day of New York, New York, Kirk Day of East Chicago, Indiana; one nephew, Michael Dorsey Jr.; a niece, Jeannette Dorsey; and three cousins, Jean Collins, Josephine Williams and Patrice L. Williams. Mr. Upshaw was a member of St. Pius X Parish in Granger, IN, and a member of the Naval Reserve Association. He served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years, of which 12 years were active duty and 18 years in the Reserves, where he served as Chief Radioman in the United States and abroad
